still behind on catching up, and it's going to stay that way for a while. tomorrow I'm heading to Charleston with Husband for our anniversary trip, followed by a 3 day work week and another weekend getaway to Maine.
then he leaves me for 6 weeks. I'm going to miss him, obviously, but he's got a pretty good excuse: he got a Fullbright scholarship to go to Turkey this summer! [why yes, I'm bragging. why not... my Husband is amazing!] so while he's gone I'll have plenty to occupy me, but until then I'll be busy accumulating more memories and photos to add to the pile...

PSA: Tybee Island beach photography
please pardon the interruption...
but I've been cranking out photos from the Tybee/ Savannah trip...
and felt the need to share a few beachy scenes.
more to come... this has been a photographic service announcement.
[I can't give tumblr all the photo love!]

road warrior
week 22: in the 3 days I was back in New Jersey between weekends in Michigan, I of course had to drive all over the garden state for work. I'm not sure exactly how many miles were involved. let's just say it's time for an oil change.

the meaning of the word home
our vacation together in Michigan was blissful. usually these trips are far too brief, but we had a whole 3 1/2 days this time. [I know- that's a long trip?]
thursday morning after we landed, we headed to our meeting with the financial planner. sounds kindof boring but, I actually found it interesting. we talked about our current assets, and where we were heading in the next few years. the planner applauded my current investment plan: 401k contributions up to the match point, then excess funds into an IRA Roth. maybe that's why I enjoyed it- he told me I was doing the right thing, and that the two of us were going to be just fine.
lunch with Papa and the rest of the fam, a much needed nap for me while Luke did Crossfit in the garage. then we headed up to meet Luke's mom for a "joint" family dinner. the next morning we packed up and drove to TC. 4 hours is a long time to spend in a car, but I love driving through northern Michigan. in fact, I just plain love northern Michigan. everything smells of green and the freedom of childhood summer.
the race... for some reason I'm not ready to write about it in gory detail. I rocked it, and that's good enough. afterwards we drove back south to Luke's house. I was understandably sore, so I took a luxurious and relaxing bath while he and his Mom went to pick up dinner. I slept like a rock that night.
sunday we held a little bbq gathering. most of my favorite people were able to be there. we caught up on life and gossip and just... hung out. Husband grilled some burgers and sausage. I drank Oberon and other delicious MI microbrews. an evening storm rolled through but didn't stop the fun. we just moved indoors. normally I would have taken a thousand pictures, but I was content to just be, and enjoy the moment.

the 16 hour flight
our first trip back to Michigan was quite the adventure. Husband was supposed to drive up right after school so that we could catch a train to the airport. he got delayed and we missed the train we had planned on taking. fortunately [?] our flight was already delayed by an hour. by the time we made it to Newark and checked in at the gate, we were delayed by another hour. which meant we missed our connection in Chicago to get back to Detroit.
there were some bad storms rolling through the midwest, so there was a chance our connection might be delayed as well, and we could still make it. if not, we planned to rent a car and drive from Chicago to Detroit. [we had a meeting with a financial planner thursday morning that we could NOT miss] at that point in time our flight would land around 9pm, and after the driving we could make it home around 3am. Luke took a powernap to prepare for the long drive.
of course, the storms grew worse to the west but cleared to the east, so our connecting flight took off from Chicago while we were still waiting in Newark. it got to be late and we decided to take the first flight out in the morning rather than drive. we were delayed and delayed, and eventually took off 5 hours after originally scheduled. we landed in Chicago around midnight and the place was packed. flights all over were delayed or canceled. we called around and were lucky to ring up the Holiday Inn Express just after someone had called from Dallas to cancel their room because their flight wasn't making it. it was literally the last room in the hotel, and quite possibly within 50 miles of the airport.
after 3 hours of sleep, we showered and took the shuttle back to the airport. our flight landed 45 minutes before our meeting, so my Mom picked us up and drove us straight there. we were only 5 minutes late.
it was a long and ridiculous trip, but I didn't mind it so much since Luke was with me. we don't get to spend much time together during the week, and weekends are always full of things to be done. as crazy as this sounds: being delayed in an airport with nothing to do for 5 hours but spend time with each other was actually quite enjoyable. snuggling up together on a plane reminded me of flying for our honeymoon. sometimes it really doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing, as long as you are together.
[plus I got to take a nap in my own bed at home later that afternoon.]

writer's block.
I keep writing things and deleting them. it's been too long since I've written and my brain is feeling rusty.
I want to catch you up on my 52 weeks project. to brag about my 1/2 marathon. to recap all my travels, and plot out the rest of the summer. to explain to you how I've come to redefine the word "home" in the past 2 weeks, and wax sentimental about the time I was able to spend with my amazing family and friends and husband. I want to share the incredible experience of capturing the happiest day of someone's life on [digital] film. to rejoice in the recent surge of inspiration and motivation for photography ideas and crafty projects. I want to talk about how I'm trying to go gluten-free, and the ways that has impacted my health, my life, and the baking blog.
a hefty list of things to share. stay tuned.
